With just over 70,000 deaths caused by drowsy driving, your team at FIAT of Winter Haven wants to help you stay alert and rested.

Sleep is a part of everyone’s life and without it, most would have a problem in thinking, reacting, and being able to accomplish tasks. Driving drowsy is one thing that all of us here at FIAT of Winter Haven believe you should not only be aware of, but understand the consequences of making the mistake just once.

While there is no test to evaluate when a person is too sleepy to get behind the wheel of a car, most people do know when he or she is past their point of exhaustion.

The National Sleep Foundation estimates nearly 170 million people have admitted to driving drowsy and 103 million have fallen asleep behind the wheel. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimates that 100,000 reported crashes per year are the result of driver fatigue. It has resulted in more than 72,000 deaths and injuries and $12.5 billion in monetary losses.

The National Safety Council reports that losing two hours of sleep is similar to the effect of a person having three beers.

Tips to Gain More Sleep for Drowsy Drivers

If you have sleeping problems, there are things that you can do to help yourself and, in the process, help keep others on the road safe too.

Taking part in a sleep apnea test is just one way to help. The test allows for doctors to study your sleep patterns and figure out why you are not getting enough sleep.

Another helpful hint is to get your body accustomed to your work schedule. If a new shift schedule is approaching, start preparing for the time change a few days in advance so that the best time for bed can be figured out to ensure enough energy for the work day ahead.

Installing blackout or light-blocking curtains are another great and easy change to make that will help when sleeping. The curtains allow for minimal light to be exposed into a room, making it easier to fall asleep, or stay asleep without disruption.

Some states and organizations are issuing public awareness campaigns as well as laws to encourage people not to drive while sleepy or drowsy.
